About Kyoto University of Education

The Kyoto University of Education has a remarkable 147-year history in training teachers from elementary to high schools. Its trainees have access to a wide range of disciplines taught by experts.

The Information Processing Center, set up in 1994, serves as a special facility in managing the university’s information needs. It caters to the research and information needs of more than 2,000 faculty members and trainees in an educational environment.

Director of Information Processing Center

As cyber-attacks become increasingly sophisticated, educating users is no longer enough. With Zimbra’s on-premises solution and robust 2FA, our email system is both secure and agile—ideal for our evolving digital landscape.

The Challenges

Recurring phishing attacks and spam exposed vulnerabilities in the university’s old email system. It became clear that simply educating users about cyber attacks was not enough to prevent such incidents. Professor Harumasa Tada, Director of Information Processing Center, stressed that advanced security measures were necessary to counter increasingly sophisticated cyber threats.

  • User-Centered Design
An intuitive interface eases the transition for both end-users and administrators, reducing support queries and ensuring efficient day-to-day operations.
  • Effortless Legacy Integration
Unlike cloud-based systems that complicate the migration of historical emails, Zimbra helped to integrate past data without compromising performance.
  • Cost Efficiency
Managing the system in-house with Zimbra has proven more cost-effective, minimizing reliance on external cloud services while offering complete data control.
  • Cutting-Edge Security
Zimbra’s built-in two-factor authentication (2FA) leverages smartphone-based verification to block unauthorized access, a necessity in today’s cyber threat landscape.Within five months, approximately 2,000 email accounts were successfully migrated, demonstrating a blend of modern security practices with pragmatic operational efficiency.
