Cannot reply or compose Blackberry Curve or 8800 series

I recently a 5.0 installation and it works great, great system. I downloaded the J2ME clients to my Curve (AT&T), and a friends 8800 (Verizon). We are each able to read mail, and view lists of messages, but neither of us can reply to messages or compose new messages. Can anyone tell me if this is a client issue, or if this is somehow related to settings on the server that are incorrect. I love the look of the client and I am anxious to be able to use it over conventional POP/IMAP or web access to my Zimbra account.
