(space bar trick solved the problem). However if I try to view an attachment, the apps locks up on the screen where it asks for permission to allow ZME to use the browser.

It sounds like your blackberry does not implement MIDlet.platformRequest() call. By the way viewing attachment works only with the Zimbra server that has attachment text extraction capability.
