Default autodiscovery of activesync settings

most phones have an 'auto-detect settings' option when setting up activesync. does anyone know how this actually works? It doesn't work for us, I've always assumed its because we don't use zimbra for our incoming mta, we have a email gateway.

The way i always assumed it works was you put in your email address, the device looks up the mx record for the domain part of the address, then tries to connect to port 80 or 443 and look for activesync capability. but since our mx records point to a system other then zimbra it never works.

can anyone confirm this or know of another way to get it to auto-detect settings for a setup like this? maybe some kinda of dns entry?

I think it's a little more complicated than a DNS entry. See Configure Exchange ActiveSync Autodiscover Settings: Exchange 2010 SP1 Help

This looks very promising: z-push.net • View topic - ActiveSync URL Autodiscovery PHP script
