We are experiencing the same trouble using Windows Mobile 2005 and IMAP connection. Some messages send just fine to outside domains while others return the "invalid message recipients" from the System Administrator. The invalid message recipients shows before the send receive is even completed.

Me too! We use Zimbra regularly (yet 4.0.3) and remote POP3 and IMAP works flawless incl. sending mails from remote clients to outside world using SMTP authentication. Now we are deploying PDAs/phones with Windows Mobile 5 and SMTP does not work as expected. When sending to Zimbra local users, it works. When sending to external users, it sometimes works but more often not (sounds crazy but true). When it does not work, in var/log/zimbra.log is "Relay access denied" error but SMTP auth is set correctly on WM device (and it may work another time!). Is this Zimbra bug? If yes, is fix available in current or future release? Is there a way to check if client really authenticated with username/password? (log somewhere?).

Thanks in advance for reply, because it is a pain in the ass right now.

Did you try to enable SSL?

Zimbra Global Settings:
Enable authentication: yes
TLS authentication only: yes

On PDA (T-Mobile MDA Vario) for SMTP:
SSL required: yes
Authentication required: yes
Independent settings: no (uses POP3).

Today's experience:
1st try - connected PDA using GPRS, send message successfully. From var/log/zimbra.log is obvious that successfull TLS connection has been established, message received and then send outside.

2nd try - right after 1st try without disconnecting GPRS I send another message. It bounced back. In var/log/zimbra log is this:
connect from ...customers.t-mobile....
NOQUEUE: reject: RCPT from ...customers.t-mobile...: 554 <...>: Relay access denied; from=<..> to=<...> proto=ESMTP helo=<Inbox>

So it looks like it is rejected without even trying to establish TLS but why? Is Zimbra to blame or the PDA?
And repeated question - is there a way to turn on SMTP auth logging so that would be seen if SMTP username/password has been passed?

Thanks, Petr
