Well you'd want to make sure it's using ssl/tls so that the authentication can't be sniffed.

We played with it once and got it to work. I went back and looked at the settings we entered on the iPhone to make sure I had them correct. But like was said, in order to get this to work right now, you have to open that port up to the world which exposes your email accounts to spammers.

No. I tried several clients with no luck. For testing, 389 is open.
