Default push sync – HOW does it work? (pure interest)

Hi,

just to clarify: this is not a question about how to get push working, but how it actually works.

we have a (licensed) zimbra server running, zimbra mobile licenses are active and my user was given mobile rights. i recently got an iphone and set it up to work with zimbra (slightly complicated, but it works now) and also set it up to accept PUSH sync requests.

the server admin invited me to an appointment, and my phone beeped at me with the invitation. this surprised both of us, as he has neither a GSM gateway or anything else funny set up (bog-standard zimbra network edition) and didn't expect it to go through. we're not complaining, as this is really cool, but we have no idea HOW it works.

can anyone enlighten us as to how this actually works?

thx, regards,
sb

Zimbra uses Microsoft Exchange Activesync (EAS) protocol, so that's more what you're interested in knowing about.
