I have used Moonrug's Exchange app for Android and it works excellently. It premium but the cost is reasonable @ $23 but you can try it first. The developers are very open to bug reports and RFE with a very quick turnaround time of about a week.

Unhappy

This is using any web browser on a stock T-Mobile HTC G1 Android, Firmware v1.5, Kernel v2.6.27-00393-g6607056 san@sandroid #1, Build CRC1.

After the 6.0 upgrade, the J2ME has become useless on large mailstores. It seems to me that it taps the phone's memory out.
I've tested it with a new Zimbra user account which does work.
A fully populated one with a large folder tree and shared folders from other existing accounts does not.

Unfortunately, since the phone is not rooted, I cannot access the logs but then I am not sure if it has robust logging anyway. Will research that.

I have also tried uninstalling several applications to free up memory to no avail.
It seems that the new J2ME interface may be causing some of the issue. Would a reinstallation of ZME help any?

Please advise.

for me, my trifecta would be imap+caldav+carddav support on android.

there has been some recent activity on the bug list for android on talk about caldav support, so if you are interested, i'ld star this issue to keep tabs on their development:

Issue 2361 - android - Add support for external calendars via iCal / CalDav - Project Hosting on Google Code

and with carddav coming out in 6.0.1 things just might come together...

I recently got my HTC Hero with android and it works perfectly out of the box with our Zimbra 5.0.16 installation. Calendar and mail just works.

Hi Lithorus, are you using "Setup exchange ActiveSync account" option?

Default htc hero & zimbra via activesync

I cant speak for Lithorus, and don't know what rom version he is running, but I can confirm my HTC Hero (nordic ver) mostly works with Zimbra via the ActiveSync profile. When I say mostly I mean everything including address book, calendar and push mail is working -- apart from actually sending mail, which is kindof sucks. The mail get stuck in what seems to be a local folder called "Out" and never gets sent. On the server in sync.log it throws java.io.IOException: Unknown encoding: utf-8
I've tested against both zcs 5.0.18 and 6.0.0
