German umlaut problem

We have a huge problem with German umlauts:

Many mails coming into our users iPhones display correctly in the preview list, but when opening the mails, all umlauts are garbled into ?.
This problem exists with most mails, but not all.

Any ideas?

We hit the same problem with 5.0.8 and french accented characters (with iPhone 3G).
