You're probably trying to send an email that is too big. Check if this is larger than what the server allows in your case. If this is true, you should get a non-delivery report. In some cases (like this one), the server is terminating the connection.

There is a bug filed on this -- 24740. This should be fixed in 5.0.3.

is there an eta on 5.0.3? This is a major issue we are dealing with.
