Default upgrade to Zimbra 5.0, what about the Outlook connector ?

hi everyone,

We are using zimbra 4.5.10 netwerk edition and Outlook 2003.
When upgrading the server from 4.5.10 to 5.0 do i need to upgrade the Outlook connector on every PC or does everyting keep working ? Anyone has tried this ?

greetings,

There's backwards compatibility because you can't immediately upgrade your server & an entire fleet of outlook users at the exact same time.
The idea is to use the connector version that's as close to your server version as possible for any server side changes that might affect things - and 5.0 has a few
After your server upgrade to 5.0 you should distribute the newest connector.

Thanks for your reply Mike,

i understand that backward compatibility is included.
still i worry a bit because the only issues i had with installing zimbra, is the Outlook connector:
1. not being able to send e-mails with certain Outlook2003 installations, until version 4.5.x came up. (4.5.8 ??).
2. the c++ runtime error poping up, rather exceptional and solved in 4.5.10.

i don't want to risk breaking the working connections i now have (105 users) without testing a few clients before upgrading everyone.

wouldn't it be advisable to install 4.5.10 on a new server and then somehow restore a full backup into this installation - OR - copy /opt/zimbra/... and install 4.5.10 on top of it,
and then test a few clients towards this new server: changing in the Outlook connector the name of the server, forcing it to change to the new server. This way i could try a few clients, without bringing all my users at the same time to the new (upgraded) server.

does this make any sense or did would you take the 'risk' and upgrade the 4.5.10 to 5.0 ? As the 4.5 changes to 5.0 it seems a major upgrade.
(Until now i've done many upgrades without any problem).

thanks for your advice,

Cool

i installed a new version of Zimbra NE on RHEL 5 to test the Outlook connector:
The Outook connector 5.0 didn't want to work with Zimbra server 5.0 for me.

The connectors 4.5.7, 4.5.9, 4.5.10 and 5.0 did work with Zimbra server 5.0.1 now, so this evening i'm upgrading from 4.5.10 to 5.0.1.

Weird that i'm the only one having trouble with this. did i miss something ??

When you say "The Outook connector 5.0 didn't want to work with Zimbra server 5.0", what error do you get?

Which OS (client side)?
There's a known issue with the ZCO not working on Windows 2000.
