Default canonical address vs. alias in GAL

We have provisioned users in our test system in the form of UID@zstore.usg.tufts.edu and gave people an alias of UID@zstore.tufts.edu and then set up first.last@tufts.edu as the canonical address.

I'm noticing that when I try to schedule an appointment with someone, all 3 addresses for each person show up.

Is there a way around the triplication?

External GAL?

Our situation is much the same - we used UID@domain so we can authenticate to our AD with the UID. But we don't have the problem you are because we also use AD as the GAL
