Question [SOLVED] BES device activation: server not responding

Hi,
I can't get the enterprise activation to work. Here are my details:

- Prior config: Windows 2000 Server, Exchange 2000, BES 3.6.
- I uninstalled Exchange 2000, BES 3.6
- I updated Windows 2000 to Windows Server 2003
- I followed the install instructions

The current situation:
- Windows 2003 Server Standard Edition, SP2
- Outlook 2007 (trial version)
- all BB-Services are running
- MAPI32.DLL: C:\WINNT\system32\MAPI32.dll, Version: 1.0.2536.0
- CDO.DLL: C:\Programme\ExchangeMapi\CDO.dll, Version: 6.5.8039.0
- Users added to BB Manager sucessfully, handhelt wiped, activation password sent to mail account
- user is being activated... ist displayed for a long time, then "Server not responding".
- Event log show only warning "[BIPPe] WARNING: Using default BIPP shared secret" (shown by Dispatcher, Policy Service, Synchronizer, Echange connector)
- ZCOLog in the attachment, as well as BES logs are attached. (please look at BES logs after 16:24, this was the last restart)
- RIM/T-Mobile Austria says, service is active

What can I do next? Please help!

-Bernhard

Default Second try

In the meantime I uninstalled everything (except for Windows Server itself) and reinstalled. I figured that I forgot to install SP1 for Outlook 2007 the first time. The fresh install has everything as indicated in the manual now including all Outlook updates. But the problem remains!

In the manual there is a section "Verify that the user is properly initialized in the BlackBerry Agent". It says to look for the e-mail address in dht _MAGT_ logs of BB. I don't have any entries for users in there!
Shutting down and restarting BB Agent did not help...

I tried again to stop and start the BES services in the correct order (as indicated in the sticky thread) and now it works!

My question to other BES users: my eventlog now is full with warnings:
'SERVER03' agent 1: will not restart - reached the maximum of 10 restarts per 24 hours

It this normal behaviour?

Have you considered upgrading to the newest version of BES (4.1.6)? It looks like something is causing your messaging agent to restart frequently. This is typically related to "hung threads" which can be attributed to many things including server performace or latency with the MAPI connection between the BES and mail server.

You are a couple of versions behind with BES and while it may not be a fix, the newer versions handle threading and messaging agents much better.

Ain't I using the latest version? I'm using 4.1.6 MR2 von BES. (File Path: C:\Programme\Research In Motion\BlackBerry Enterprise Server\BlackBerryAgent.exe , File Version: 4.1.6.24
There is no newer version in the BB download section...

Default blackberry database consistency service?

Bernhard,
You might try stopping/disabling the Blackberry Database Consistency service. I cannot scientifically say yet that it's the answer to all my problems (I had very similar ones to yours, but so much was going on it was hard to pinpoint the real problem), but I do know that when I reinstalled all components freshly Jan. 5th, starting off with the BB Database Consistency service disabled, I've been running so smoothly with our two test Blackberries. That's ten days straight, something I never achieved in my previous setup that, as far as I know, only differed from this setup with that service being disabled. Might it have just been the reinstall? Sure, it could be, but I'm wary of turning on that service now. I could not figure out before how to get the Agent service to run stably, and we quickly reached the maximum of 10 restarts in about 10 minutes, well under 24 hours!

By the way, I got the idea to try disabling that service at all from this forum:
BES Problems.... The description of what the service does sure sounds like it would be important, but this Zimbra employee said it is not. Perhaps unrelated to your problem, but easy to try.

I'm on 5.0.10 Network Edition 64-bit SuSE Enterprise server 10. And BlackBerry Enterprise Server Version: 4.1.6.10 (server configuration tab in BB Manager). ZCB used was ZimbraBESConnector-5.0.10_GA_2514_5.0.2676.10.msi.
