But as stated you can use another client like thunderbird etc and transfer messges to your local machine...
(for long term storage-if you dont actually plan on going through the messages anytime soon- you can grab the zip of a folder in .eml format like this:

You can also make better use of HSM (hierarchical storage management) which comes with the NE edition, to move stuff off to cheaper storage drives...
