[SOLVED] Saving Archived Messages onto Hard disk

I have been playing around Zimbra on the test server and surfing the online help, zimbra wiki and forum but couldn't find any information on saving the archived messages onto hard disk. If I missed it I am sorry. How do I save the old messages onto hard disk when the mailbox quota is reached?

Increased the mailbox quota (hard disk is cheap and you'll lose the ability to search for email) or copy the mail to another user account with something like thunderbird. You could always get the Network Edition with the Archiving feature.

But as stated you can use another client like thunderbird etc and transfer messges to your local machine...
(for long term storage-if you dont actually plan on going through the messages anytime soon- you can grab the zip of a folder in .eml format like this: http://zimbra.domain.com/zimbra/user/mmorse/inbox.zip )

You can also make better use of HSM (hierarchical storage management) which comes with the NE edition, to move stuff off to cheaper storage drives...

The archiving & discovery add on is meant to be transparent to the end user:

The problem with HSM is that it does not relieve the quota.

Well yes, but that wasn't the point. The reason I mentioned it was to get them thinking about moving stuff to cheaper (slower whatever) secondary storage-thus bigger quotas.

OK But we are not all in a position to just add more storage. He wanted to remove messages to get account back to the quota. It would be nice if the HSM storage was not counted in the quota or with a separate quota.

Well than he's back to one of the offline storage methods.

Open an REF if you would like to see 'option to enable separate HSM quotas'.

Or you could take it a step further-because the user might not know what mail is in HSM-and open an REF for: 'still server based, but separate permanent folder for self/user archive with different quota'

I've been off this post for a while. Now that we are in production with Zimbra and we're importing our user's mail in from Outlook, yes we have some e-mail hogs that have gone way over their quota. I can up the quota for now, but I know that a lot of the e-mail is historical. They may not need the messages day-to-day, but they may want to refer to a message months later.

It would be great if there is a way they could store this type of mail off-line, not taking quota space and not tying up disk space. Sure disk is cheap, but that's not the point.

Is there a way they can export messages to another storage medium? Whether it's a jump drive, their laptop HD, etc?
