When running on a Windows Client can Zimbra be registered as the default mail client so that mailto: tags work, and all the Send to Mail Recipient As Attachment stuff in Office works?

Currently I adminster horrible, horrible Outlook clients to a POP3 mailbox, but if we lose that functionality it is an horrendous sell.

mailto links: I seriosly doubt it, mabey i am confused, zimbra has a IMAP and POP3 server too. So you could still use outlook/thunderbird and the like. Someone correct me if i am wrong here, but would'nt that kind of be defeating the purpose.

On the other hand it could probably be done, but why.

I could enviage an small app that pretends that it is a mailling client to the operating system, but hands off all processing to the web client.

The point would be that you have the benefits of the zero footprint e-mail client with centralised configuration, but the user does not lose any functionality.

You could have the greatest groupware system conceivable, but if the MD can't send his Word docs from the File menu in Word, you'd face an uphill battle selling it.

We have a small toaster app (think systray) that will check for new mail. At some point we'll release this to the commuity. A featreu request for that could be to have it also handle mailto: links.

zimbra has a IMAP and POP3 server too.

Correct. Our server supports standard POP3 and IMAP. So if your uer use only POP3 today then it'd be an easy switch since there is no migration.

It is definitely possible to have mailto: links go to a web mail app, Yahoo/gmail both allow you to do that. Definitely on the list of things we want to do.

Not only is it possible, here's how you would do it:

Once our ajax client has a direct link to the compose window, you need to whip up an exe to auth against zimbra and launch the compose window in your default browser.

You then set HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\mailto\shell\open\command (defines the default MailTo handler for your system) to the launch exe and you're done.

Is there progress on allowing direct links to the ajax client's compose window? And is someone likely to provide the launch exe? Thanks.

Not yet. We had a small mail checker at one-point, but nobody has worked on it in sometime. Eventually we'll pull it out and add the ability to catch mailto: calls.

Hello, I just found this plugin for firefox https://addons.mozilla.org/extension...cation=firefox that allows you to have mailto: links open webmail. I was woundering how would I tell ZImbra that this is a mail link?

Not sure how this plugin works, but you can tell zimbra you want to go straight to compose by setting your URL to something like this:

https://sub.domain.com/zimbra/mail?v...meone%20there?

basically, append everything from the "?" and onwards to the URL and you should be good to go (and of course, you must already be authenticated).
