Messages Not Updating Automatically

Many times when I'm using Zimbra, I notice that the new message count in my inbox folder is greater than the number of new messages shown in the message list. If I then click on the "Get Mail" button, it manually updates the message list and the new messages appear.

Why does this happen? If Zimbra is able to update the message count automatically, why can't it also update the actual messages in the list? The user shouldn't have to constantly click on "Get Mail" in order to force the message list to update.

I'm not sure what you mean.

The problem I'm experiencing has nothing to do with searching. When I have my inbox open the new message count (in the folder pane) periodically updates as new messages come in. However, I notice that the new messages often don't appear in the inbox until I click on the "Get Mail" button.

Shouldn't the new message count for a given folder always be consistent with the actual number of new messages that are displayed in the folder? The user shouldn't have to click on "Get Mail" to synchronize these.

Are you in message or conversation view when you click on the Inbox and wait for updates?

Are there reboots to the server involved? Are you taking your client offline (sleeping a laptop, etc.) in the middle?

(Just trying to find out if anything's odd in the setup here, because you shouldn't be seeing what you're seeing.)

I've only ever used conversation view, so not sure if this problem is specific to that view.

No server reboots and the client remains open in my browser.

If you're using Firefox, check the Javascript console for any *javascript* errors (ignore any of the CSS errors).

You can also try this:

- Send yourself an email from *outside* of zimbra to your Zimbra account.
- Now,, login to ZWC and make sure you're looking at your Inbox.
- Enter "$set:noop" (minus the quotes) in the search bar which will send out a "NoOp" request to the server. The server will send back a noop response with any new changes since the last time a request was made.
- Keep doing this every few seconds until the message you sent arrives. At which point you should see the Inbox unread count update as well as the new message in your Inbox.

If this does not happen, then we'll need additional info. from you like, under Options > Mail, what do you have set for "Initial msil search" ?

The other thing you can do is create a new bug under bugzilla with as much info. as you can provide about your setup so we can help you repro.

One of our customers has the same issue, the new message count increases but there are no new messages shown until you click on "Get Mail". I noticed this, too.

This behavior doesn't occur always but after using the web client some time.

The Browser is Firefox2 (Windows/Linux).

Is there anything known about that? Something I can do?

ZImbra release/version and operating system? Have you tried the steps posted by pshah in the post above yours? If not then try them and get some more information on the problem.

Like I wrote, the behavior doesn't occur always. I will try the $set:noop when it happens again. When I do it now, there Is no problem and the mails are displayed as they should.

Default Mail Search: in:inbox
