Question Future of briefcase / Octopus

There is no information for Zimbra customers about the future of Briefcase vs Octopus, nor how it will affect them and their deployments.

Paying customers need to make long-term plans, and expect at least a solid indication of whether major features will continue to be available.

Please can VMWare set-out for your users (here or in a blog post) whether:

    1) is briefcase is being deprecated, and scheduled for removal in Zimbra 9?

    2) is Octopus going to provide a drop-in replacement for briefcase?

    3) will Octopus be available for opensource users?

    4) will Octopus be available and installable for basic Zimbra Network or opensource users (i.e. those who have a single installation, who don't want or need Horizon etc...)

    5) if so, will Octopus be an extra cost on top of the current Zimbra licence?

    6) will Octopus be installable within/with Zimbra, or will it require a separate hosting environment?

    7) will Zimbra tags and email attachments be shared/shareable with Octopus?

    +1 for these questions.

Noticed about this feature, and maybe another couple, Zimbra lacks about promotion in future features.

We are still in the planning phases for the future of Briefcase and we should be prepared to announce more information in the first half of 2013. Below are some comments on your questions...

    1) is briefcase is being deprecated, and scheduled for removal in Zimbra 9?

Zimbra team -> We are no longer investing in Briefcase but we do not have a timeline to remove it. Zimbra's goal is to be the best, open and platform neutral email, calendar and address book in the market. We want to integrate with leading unified communications, file sharing, social and team collaboration software. Some of these products will be offered by VMware and will be bundled with Zimbra.

    2) is Octopus going to provide a drop-in replacement for briefcase?

Zimbra team -> No. Horizon Data (Octopus) is a separate product that will integrate with Zimbra and other VMware products. Horizon Data is a very different product than what the Briefcase feature offers. Horizon Data includes sync clients, mobile clients, SaaS identity management and mobile application management. All of this functionality is required to be competitive with the leading file collaboration solutions in the market.

    3) will Octopus be available for opensource users?

Zimbra team -> The Horizon Suite and Horizon Data are not planned to be available as an open source solution.

    4) will Octopus be available and installable for basic Zimbra Network or opensource users (i.e. those who have a single installation, who don't want or need Horizon)

Zimbra team -> Horizon Data will likely be offered as a standalone product that can run alongside Zimbra and it will have many points of integration with Zimbra.

    5) if so, will Octopus be an extra cost on top of the current Zimbra licence?

Zimbra team -> Pricing and packaging for Horizon Data will be announced when it is GA in 2013. We are very aware that Zimbra customers would like to have product integration and a pricing bundle that would include both products. We will take that into account and work with the internal teams to come up with a add on bundle for Zimbra customers.

    6) will Octopus be installable within/with Zimbra, or will it require a separate hosting environment?

Zimbra team -> Horizon Data will be a separate product and will be installed separately.

    7) will Zimbra tags and email attachments be shared/shareable with Octopus?

Zimbra team -> We are focusing on integrating save to, attach from and send to Horizon Data. We are open to other integration points as well.

Rob/Zimbra Team, many thanks for your thorough and speedy response. I'm sure many users, purchasers, developers and administrators alike appreciate such positive communication, we now have a much better insight.

I just have four supplementary questions/comments:

    >> Zimbra team -> We are no longer investing in Briefcase but we do not have a timeline to remove it. Zimbra's goal is to be the best, open and platform neutral email, calendar and address book in the market. We want to integrate with leading unified communications, file sharing, social and team collaboration software. Some of these products will be offered by VMware and will be bundled with Zimbra.

That's good to hear. It would be great to have APIs/SDKs (similar to the Voice SDK) to intergrate IM clients and servers, other data/file providers etc... (for example Evernote).

Is the Workspace concept going to be (re)explored? That seemed to be an angle that would prove incredibly useful to groups (working in shared spaces with group-owned mailboxes, calenders, and items, rather than sharing bit by bit with individually-owned items).

You suggested (in response to Q 4.) that Horizon Data is likely to be offered as a standalone product that can run alongside Zimbra, with many points of intergration. To clarify, is it likely to be feasible, for those Zimbra users who have low-scale instances of Zimbra, with lesser needs more akin to Briefcase (for example non-profits, small businesses, individuals), to leverage Horizon Data for purely file management/sharing, and without needing wider Horizon Suite and Horizon Data broader features?

    >> Zimbra team -> We are focusing on integrating save to, attach from and send to Horizon Data. We are open to other integration points as well.

One of the benefits and ('relatively' unique) selling points of Zimbra (unlike Google Apps or Microsoft's Office products for example) has been the integration of items - files, tasks, events, contacts, emails, in a smooth and singular environment, unified by tags and shared search. This makes for a better workflow.

Thus, it would be hugely useful to integrate into Horizon Data
    a) tagging that can be shared with Zimbra, and
    b) search within Zimbra interface, and
    c) utilising Horizon Data within the Zimbra UI.

If these aren't already on the roadmap, will you consider their implementation?

Without these Zimbra users would effectively experience a regression from current file management with Briefcase, and may as well utilise alternative enterprise file management providers, thus these integrations would surely benefit Zimbra stickiness.

The same driving factors are why Zimbra users and admins bemoan the lack of IM features; it's much easier to sell, and use, Zimbra, as a unified product. As you rightly realise, users don't need to consider whether components are internal or external providers, they do however desire a shared UI.

    >> Zimbra Team -> We agree 100% and we are looking at video and IM as part of Zimbra 9.

    >> Zimbra team -> Unlikely. We believe that VMware's Socialcast product is the best product for team collaboration around messages and files. We want to do more to make it easier to run different VMware products together going forward so look for more integrations between the products.

    >> Zimbra team -> We are planning to offer Horizon Data as a standalone product and customers will not need to buy the Horizon Suite. We will work over time to improve the installation and management of the products so that they are better integrated.

    >> Zimbra team -> Thank you for the feedback. We are open to all three and we will see what we can get done in a V1 integration.

    >> Zimbra team -> We agree and we are going to focus on providing an integrated user experience with a plugable API to integrate with the best in class services in the market.
