Accept invitation by normal email

It seems that invitation requests go out in an Outlook specific format. Aside from the web client, Outlook users can click on the accept button to accept a meeting request.

Has anybody figured out a way for users in other mail clients (like Thunderbird) to accept meeting requests?

Any update on this? We have Mac users and I am afraid that things won't work for them that will work for PC users.
