zimbra Imap <> Apple mail (5 =lion)

Hi,

While normally using the zimbra webclient, I started to play around with Zimbra IMAP and Apple Mail.

The setup of Zimbra, IMAPS and the Apple Mail client was surprisingly not that complicated.
A bleep from my laptop indicated that mails were coming into the laptop.
Replying/sending also worked.

Wow! it works....

Until I realized that the client was seemingly downloading ALL messages in my zimbra mailbox plus those in shared mailboxes I've access to. All 5 years of it, no wonder the laptop started to huff.

In Apple Mail, I found a quota list showing all the folders and subfolders, but I can't set/alter limits.
There's also a subscription list where I suppose I would select the folders to download/monitor. but it is empty. This, I think, because the download was not complete when I interrupted it.

How can I limit the number of messages or folders that get downloaded?

apple mail = mail 5.0 = os x lion
zimbra = see above

Unfortunately, there is no end user method to restrict or disallow messages located on your email server to be downloaded to the Apple mail client.

The quota list is there for you to manage each folder's storage space and overall storage space.

No end user method, OK. Is there a zimbra admin method to restrict it?
I only found a mailbox global quota option. It is not active now.
As my mailbox is also my archive (messages are not deleted), imposing a zimbra quota will break the archive.

If the quota list you mention is the one located on the apple, I cannot change the values therein (greyed out).

Adjusting of the quota limit is a global setting from what i have learned. this is handled by the engineers in charge of the Zimbra Servers and service. When creating a mailbox in the admin console this feature is not present.

I think what the OP is asking is exactly what Gmail provides - folder size limits - so your iMap program only downloads the most recent 10k messages or something. Gmail provides this:

How to Enable Folder Size Limits
Log into Gmail.com
Go to Mail Settings (the "gear" at the top right corner of the website)
Select the Forwarding and POP/IMAP tab
Scroll down to the Folder Size Limits section near the bottom, and choose the option to "Limit IMAP folders to contain no more than this many messages".

I have run into this a number of times where e-mail programs choke due to the number of messages in a Zimbra mail box. Seems like it would be an easy thing to incorporate with a lot of beneft.

The Zimbra equivalent is handled on the server end.
