Thread: Sharing tags for address book

Question Sharing tags for address book

    Hi,

I've been installing and evaluating Zimbra Network edition, evaluating its different capabilities. I must say that it seems a very innovative product.

My end application for Zimbra is as a collaboration tool between different organisations, where members can access group address books, calendars etc. despite belonging to different organisations.

At the minute, I'm trying to see whether it is possible to create an address book that defines different 'roles' for members, with the possibility that a list member could belong to more than 1 role. With these roles defined, tasks/messages/appointments could be sent to 'roles', not just to lists.

It seems to me that this is possible, however, it is essential that I be able to share this address book once created with the members of my collaboration group - including the tags/roles that I defined! At the minute I can create the address book and create the roles using tags. However when I share the addres book, the recipient doesn't have access to the tags I created, defining the roles. Is there any way to share tag information, and if not, is this funcionality on the roadmap? Any info would be appreciated.

    Cheers,
    Kevin

I need to share an address book with the ability for all users (owner and all recipients with management privileges) to add, edit and delete tags.

This is an SMB environment with two full time sales people and a production shop all needing to enter contacts, change their status and maintain their data. In addition to Sales and Production, the Billing department and Management information functions need access to this information.

What is really needed is the full functionality of the contact list/address book shared among all users. This includes adding, editing and removing tags.

There is an enhancement request at http://bugzilla.zimbra.com/show_bug.cgi?id=11124 , if you need this functionality, go vote for it.

    Regards,

    -Glen

Check the bug report and vote on it if you want it to give it some weight.

    Thanks..

I did .. there are 30 votes for this 'enhancement'. I guess it doesn't do much good to echo others but I can't believe that such a useful feature as tagging is non-functional with sharing a folder and that such tags are not transferrable. Hope someone addresses this soon, but after almost 2 years on the books.. I'm not hopeful. I suspect I'll have to go back to Exchange.

    Default address book needs functionality

I agree, we are also trying to use the address book for sharing and it has major problems: no tag sharing, no custom fields. This is a major limitation for groupware. The custom fields enhancement request has been there for over 2 years. Is anyone working on the address book functionality?

If you're an NE user you should raise a support case and ask for it to be added to that bug report, you should also vote on it. If you're not NE then vote on it anyway.

Thanks, I am a NE user, so I'll do that. I've voted on both cases.

I think it's an incredibly complicated RFE because tags are global, not folder or even application-specific, and can be renamed. Imagine the cascading effects. Let's say user A has access to user B's tasks and user C's inbox. All three users have a tag "foo." User C renames his "foo" tag, which is applied to both his email and his tasks, to "bar." What is the right thing to do?

For some applications, consider the apparently-just-unveiled Mailboxes: Sharing vs. Relationships » Zimbra :: Blog

As a workaround for email, but not other shared types, "Flag," "Unread," and whether it's been moved to a subfolder are all shareable.
