i am also very disappointed about the crappy search-function in zimbra!
why the hell do they use a database?
every little opensource webmailer or groupware is able to search like described here!
i our case (>50 users) we probably will search for another system - only because of not functional search!
we wanted a professional system - it's difficult to find one - openexchange isn't either ...![]()
The Zimbra's engine search is based on Lucene. About Lucene prefix wildcards i had found this:

Yes, aa*car* is supported by QueryParser.
Let me emphasize that prefix wildcards (*car*)
are supported by WildcardQuery -
it is QueryParser that prevents those
potentionally performance killing queries from being made.
What wildcard search support is available from Lucene?
I think this explain because this feature is not yet implemented.
