Default Zimbra For Bis

I will be starting college next year.I know for sure that my college has ZCS.
I am not sure about BES though. My question is this.If I buy a blackberry and there is no BES how do I go about using my Blackberry to sync with my zimbra account. Will it also work with BIS?What is the difference between the two?Or should i get myself another smartphone say Nokia E71?

Oh I also plan on using Mac instead of Windows.

You can certainly sync any phone that has an IMAP client with any version of Zimbra assuming your college allows IMAP access. However, the question about BES and syncing a smartphone is best directed to the mail administrator (or your college helpdesk) as we have no idea which version of Zimbra they're using (features are different between the Open Source version and the Network Edition) nor which features they have enabled for students.

Let us assume that they use Network Edition(Coz when I checked the webmail page they had a mobile log in option, which might also mean web client but let us be positive here)and have no BES installed.
So if I buy a BB with BIS from my carrier can I download and use the connector for smartphones instead of Blackberry connector. Will it work?
I really like the features of OTA,syncing, etc.

You need to find out if your college allows you to use IMAP or POP3. They probably do and you can almost certainly find this out on your colleges IT support site which are often open to anyone even if you're not yet at college.

If that is supported you will almost certainly have no problem with BIS. Your college may allow you to use Outlook with ZCS and if so you should be able to sync calendar and contacts using Blackberry desktop manager. I doubt your college has a BES server for students but if so you can also sync calendar and contacts wirelessly.

I read about notifysync for blackberry. Can I use it to sync my blackberry with my zimbra mail account?Notifysync is compatible with Zimbra.
NotifySync - BlackBerry Sync - Sync BlackBerry Email PC contacts and pim data
Will this one help individual users with zimbra and BIS?

The page you've linked to has this paragraph:

Quote:
If your company mailserver supports ActiveSync for the Windows Mobile and iPhone platforms, you can now fully sync your BlackBerry to all your email folders including inbox, drafts, sent items, deleted items etc as well as your contacts, calender and tasks using this small inexpensive program
Doing a sync via 'ActiveSync' is not a feature of the Open Source version of Zimbra, it is a feature of the Network Edition. You need to contact your college helpdesk or their support pages and get the information from them on what service they provide and what features you can use otherwise we're all stumbling round in the dark trying to answer your questions.
