Default Accessing GAL via Thunderbird

Hi,

May I know if it is possible for an external LDAP client to access the GAL for a particular domain in Zimbra? I'm trying to make it possible for users who choose to use a local email client to search the GAL (for convenience's sake).

I tried using Thunderbird and tried varying DN strings from the zimbra.ldif file but the query always returns a big fat zero. I do not know a whole lot about LDAP but am trying to experiment. Would be very nice if someone could just give a couple of pointers for me to experiment further. If the OpenLDAP server is configured to not allow external access, it would be even better if someone told me this so that I don't waste any more time towards this end.

Thanks!
Wong
