Invite yourself to other's calendar entries?

Does anyone know if the capability to request invitation to another user's calendar entries exists in any version of the system?

We're running into a scenario where we'd like to push out a calendar specifically for our organization's events, and it would be less cumbersome on the users if they could invite themselves to the event versus having the various groups of people re-create the entry.

This is important because we view everyone's calendars to determine availability when scheduling. Another issue is that the events do not encompass the same users every time.

Icing on the cake would be if there was a method have the account with the original calendar auto-accept these invitations.

I'm also open to hearing alternative ideas that may be more efficient than manual re-creation on the user's end.
