Shared files questions.

I'm currently testing out the shared feature in my open source version of Zimbra, here is what I'm trying to do. So far I've made a shared folder, put a spreadsheet file in it (xls) and granted an internal user 'Manager' rights. I wanted for this file to be editable by him.

Problem: the file is opend as 'Read Only'. It can be edited by the granted person but cannot be saved to the original location (my shared briefcase folder). What am I doing wrong?

My goal is for everyone with granted rights to be able to open my shared files, edit/update the file and save it in my Briefcase shared folder. Is this doable?

And also in my Briefcase, xls or doc extensions, the 'type' info is an unknown binary in my open source Zimbra. Is this normal? Because I've seen some video tutorial on Zimbra that shows the rigth type info and gave the right icon to it.

I attempted to replicate your issue to see if I can help with the problems you are seeing.

1) I created a new Briefcase folder
2) Uploaded an Excel spreadsheet
3) shared the folder with an internal user as Manager
4) Internal user accepted the share
5) Internal user was able to double click on file and open to edit/change etc

Did you do any steps differently?

Sorry for the late response on my part, didn't know somebody took interest in my problem. Thx.

As for the step, I did not do it like it was supposed at first. I went from step 1 trough 3. But the receiver did not Accept the 'Shared' request by mail. Sender and receiver was me with 2 test account (didn't realize that i have to 'accept' it). I was misled by the "shared" mail request that have a message body of link to the 'Shared' folder, so I thought it was Zimbra's way to do the share mechanism. The link of course was browsable after entering user id and pass of the granted account. The file could be open (read only), but could not be edited.

After realizing my mistake, i made up another folder, but this time I followed the right way. And the result was, in the granted account, it shows the shared folder in his briefcase. All is well except the file is still read only, it is editable, but could not be saved in its current location (the share giver briefcase). If i want to save it, i have to do a local copy.

Are you using the open source version like myself? When you opened the shared spreadsheet trough Zimbra briefcase, was it marked 'Read Only'? Can you saved it in the share giver briefcase or was it a local save? I liked to know if it's working for you.

The version you use doesn't make any difference, this feature works the same on NE & Open Source.

What was the resolution to this problem?

I am having the same experience as Bill. Using Zimbra ZCS and Desktop on XP stations and Centos server. When internal user opens XLSX spreadsheet from Desktop, she can alter it but it is Read Only. She is not prompted for user or password. When I (admin), owner of shared Briefcase, open spreadsheet on ZCS it asks me for user and password even though I am owner. That only happened first time I opened it. It opens for me as Read Only as well so can thus not be saved to anything but a new document. It would be nice to be able to save as original doc. Does anyone have a solution or workaround?

Unfortunately we were not able to replicate the problem so we couldn't move much further. I tried to simulate the issue a few different ways but it worked for my users every way I could think of.

Padpik, your issue does seem a bit different though, did you share the briefcase with the user? Did they accept the share? Are you using the program Zimbra Desktop or just Zimbra the webmail client?

Yes, they accepted the Share. We are using both Desktop and webmail (I call ZCS version). Same problem from each. What is really weird is that I can not even change my Briefcase docs as they open Read Only. I tried changing the spreadsheet through Excel to a Shared Workbook and then when it is opened through Zimbra Briefcase it says "(Read Only) (Shared)". Weird, eh? I even tried sharing the individual folders in briefcase to see if that made a difference to no avail. Very important that this works because it is one of the main reasons I went to a server. So we could share docs internally. I appreciate any help you can be.

I wasn't aware that you could directly open a file from the briefcase. Isn't it a case of downloading editing and then uploading?

If you are comfortable and the document doesn't contain any confidential information, could you share it with support@mxtoolbox.com?

Also, what version of Zimbra are you running on?
