Feedback from a Zimbra customer using Windows having moved from Outlook

Received this feedback from a Zimbra customer today using Windows having moved from Outlook.

This is a Windows issue, not a client issue, and affects more e-mail programs than just Zimbra.

Until Microsoft makes it easy to change the default handler for MIME types, this will not be changed.

For example, how does one make GMail the default mail handler in Windows without resorting to registry hacks? ;)

There are several Zimbra server issues independent of the client OS.

Bug 37910 – No cc= or bcc= parameters for view=compose

Bug 27063 – "mailto:" is passed into the prepopulated "to:" field when setting zimbra as default mail app

My users have this same issue. They use the web interface and I had to set up Outlook to connect to Zimbra so they can use it.
This is a huge issue I hope someone finds a fix for

In an ideal world, it would be as you've stated & I understand your logic. However this is not acceptable to end users. In their eyes, the fact that Zimbra does not support this type of feature is a failing in Zimbra not Windows.

Blaming Windows just gets us no where.

Still looking for a solution having tried Zimbra Desktop and their Global Option to handle 'Sent To' which didn't work and Zimbra Toaster which also didn't work. Will be trying a few Windows Registry hacks today.

We use a small gadget called ZimbraNotifier:

One of its features is to redirect mailto:-links in windows to zimbra

It does seem to do all kinds of other neat things. That's cool, but I'm
afraid there is no way I could do this.

I strongly disagree. To state that this is a Windows issue would imply that perhaps it works just fine on one or more other operating system, such as OS X, Linux, BSD, Solaris. Zimbra can run in a browser window on any of those, but a mailto: on a different website still may have difficulty in opening Zimbra to the correct location.

The fix for making it work correctly would vary depending on the OS used, but that does not mean that the OS is at fault.
