shared calendars/contacts I just don't understand

How this works.

I've poked around at this for a while.

Okay, I have a group (Distribution list? Is this the same thing).

This group is called Users (original huh?)

I have created 26 users, alice.anderson all the way
through zuri.zackery

I have added these members to the list. all of them.

Now, I want All of them to have easy access to a common calendar
and a common address book.

*AND* if alice.anderson wants everyone in the group to be able to
see her calendar, then I want everyone in the group to be able
to subscribe to it, somehow.

Am I dreaming? Can this be done?
All clues deeply appreciated.

You can create a new account with a calendar and address book, and share those too all your users using the "users" group. Your users can also share their folders (email/cal/address/etc) with other users using the "users" group.

The users will see the permission listed as the name of the group instead of each individual username when they look at the properties on the folder.

Okay, wait, lets start all over again.

What is a group? Is what the rest of the planet (I can't speak for other planets) calls a group, what Zimbra calls a Distribution List?

Okay, if that's so;

I create a Distribution List call Aardvark

I 'add users to a list" all my users to Aardvark

How Do I Get All My Users To Be Able To See A Common Calendar?
(or address book for that matter)

I have not been able to understand this.

I have been trying (sometimes harder than others) since Zimbra 3.2

Let me put it another way.

When I log in as alice.ackerman,

Alice is able to share her calendar with the group.

I do that.

Then I log in as bob.brill. Bob is a member of Users, but he doesn't
see a Users calendar, nor does he see an Alice calender, just
Calendar.

When Alice shares her calendar with the group, an email share message is sent to Bob as he is a group member. Unless he accepts the share, Alice's calendar will not appear in his calendar overview.

shared place, and then adding people to it, accomplishes nothing.

There is no way for them to access a shared calendar, unless the
creation of the calender occurs after they are joined to the group?

There must be a step by step somewhere of how this is supposed to work.

Employees come and go, you may have dozens of shared resources,
how on earth do you get folks onto a shared resource?

Which implies that i will have to burn a seat license per shared 'thing'
be that a resource, a calender, a 'distribution list' an address book, etc.

This might be a deal killer. This isn't good.

Oh, so you want to add people to the distribution list (group whatever) AFTER and add the calendar to them?

To add a share to something that's been previously shared, you can create your Calendar (or address book, etc) by copying the link given when you create the share. The dialog for the share has a URL near the bottom like this:

http://mail.domain.com/home/username/Calendar

When you go to create a new calendar there is a checkbox for "Synchronize appointments from remote calendar" - this opens up a text box where you can enter in that URL and connect to the previously shared calendar.
