I would like to setup mine for use with googlechat as well..

I have split DNS.. so i have external DNS servers..

would i add a record like this to the external dns servers?
_xmpp-client._tcp SRV 10 10 5222 {zcs_server_name}.
_xmpp-server._tcp SRV 10 10 5269 {zcs_server_name}.

Would i need to add anythig to the zimbra dns server..? It has my local record (split dns with internal ip) and is setup to use external forwarders.

then i would open the ports for 5269 and 5222 inbound?

(outbound is not blocked at this time)

I have not been able to find specific enough information on this issue and how it works.. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Correct; but make sure that your {zcs_server_name} resolves to the external address and not the internal.
