I'm sure there is an obvious answer to this on these boards or elsewhere but I can't find it.
Using an IMAP client, in my case Evolution, deleting messages via the client does not delete the messages on the server.
Thanks

how do you know the messages aren't deleted on the server?
if you close evolution and then load the web client, are the messages in the trash?
are there any clues in the zimbra.logs?
My inbox via the web interface shows 36 messages. I see 4 in evolution. I delete a message in evolution, still appears in web interface.
Nothing apparent to me in the logs.
Basically it seems to be working like a standard POP interface with a leave copy of message on server option.

IIRC, in evolution when you delete a message it only gets the moved to Trash. To completely remove them from the server as well you need to go to the menu Actions/Expunge or hit ctrl-e - that will delete them from Evolution and the server.

i think he's referring to the problem outlined here:
http://bugzilla.zimbra.com/show_bug.cgi?id=2712
i agree, its very confusing behaviour to those who use multiple clients or who share accounts with others.
dijichi2, you are corect. The following bug is exactly it. I can't figure out anyway in Evolution, at least via the GUI options, to change behavior.

Now how to deal with it...
I don't really understand why this is a problem.Originally Posted by roastpork

If you set Evolution to empty the trash on exit or if you want to do it immediately then just empty the trash and the messages will be deleted from the Zimbra server. Be aware that they won't go to Trash in the web UI of Zimbra they will be gone, if you also have the zimbra web ui open then you'll need to do a refresh as they'll still show in the list of email. Doesn't that do what you want?

this is not the problem. the problem is that most imap clients mark the message as \Deleted and then hide such flagged messages prior to expunge. this is also the case if you move a message which in imap speak is a copy+delete. so if you delete or move messages from an imap client, before you expunge or logout/expunge, they still show up as normal messages in the zimbra webUI. for an account that is shared between different people using different clients, as is common with an info@ or webmaster@ account in larger organizations, this is very confusing behaviour. this may not be the way zimbra like us to use email, but thats the way it happens, like it or not. to not give an option to make these flagged messages obvious or hide them is simply incorrect.
Well, the same thing happens if you use two different clients such as Evolution one one PC and Kmail on another - delete it in Kmail and it still shows in the inbox in Evolution. This doesn't appear to me, a problem with the Zimbra gui.
Not being an expert on IMAP I can't comment on whether that's the correct behaviour. Are you implying that Zimbra isn't following an RFC spec? If you (or the original o/p) would like different behaviour then vote for the bug or put a new one in bugzilla. Perhaps this is a problem with the particular clients being used?
