Can not open .doc attachments

When I click on a .doc attachment it does not open. Other types of attachments open as expected including .xls files. Instead of opening I see a "save as" file dialog box briefly flash on the screen. It seems as if an attempt is being made to save the document to my desktop. a second attempt to open the file does not result in the dialog box appearing. I am using the network version of Zimbra 5.09 although the problem occurred on the last several releases. I use FF3, Vista, and Open Office 2.4. I changed the .doc file association to notepad but the attachment still would not open.

Anyone have any ideas?
