Default polling interval

when i set the polling interval to any time it does not seem to check the mail in any interval .. it is as simple as changing the user options right?

Yes. Are you setting this in the Admin UI or the Options? Are you using FireFox. I know for IE there is a bug and polling I think we broke in a couple releases. There also may be some caching of the LDAP so you need to wait, relogin or bounce tomcat.

***edit
it is almost as if the area that displays the mail is not refreshing.

***edit2
ok the delete thing only happens in message view not in conversation

Are you using firefox or IE? Does it appear if you click on your inbox then click back on calendar. If so then the app is not polling and to get updates from the server. At least on IE this had a bug on a couple recent versions. It's working fine in the next release.
