Can Zimbra work as just an IMAP client?

I'd like to replace Horde/Squirrelmail as the webmail clients for customers at my hosting company, and zimbra was brought to my attention. All the information I've been able to see have suggested that it's intrinsically tied to the server software.

Will the webmail client work with other backend services over IMAP?
