detach attachments?

Is there a way to detach attachments from a message? Would like to download attachment to disk, then detach/delete the attachment, but keep the message.

I think Zimbra's answer for deleting/archiving email attachments is the Zimbra Desktop application which allows you to save email to a "local" repository. Zimbra Desktop 1.0 is now available.
