So, yeah, a taskbar notifier for me would do it
A Zimbra Notifier app that worked with the Windows systray, the MacOS X dock, the KDE systray (and I guess whatever the GNOME tray thingie is) would be awesome.

Something that popped up meeting reminders, new messages, task reminders, and maybe IM status updates.

Something that can be run while the browser is closed.

Freddie, what you want looks like an "extended" Toaster (that is already available and works this way for mails) 8)

Pretty much, but available for systems running KDE (and maybe GNOME) on Linux/BSD. We're moving our district away from Windows, so the existing Toaster isn't useful for us.

Cheers,
Freddie

Default Zimbra Toaster alternative

I have ben testing a new alternative to Zimbra Toaster. It's called Zimbra Notifier and can be downloaded from here
Habitech
It has many advantages as the following:
  1. Notifies appointment items as well as maill items
  2. Works in Windows 98 and beyound (doesnt requires .Net Framework)
  3. Changes the icon when a new mail arrives and cleans it when it's marked as read or deleted.
  4. Configurable alert mechanism (modal window, sound, alert balloon in Taskbar Notification Area)
  5. Allows omission of the spam folder elements
  6. Obeys polling interval from the Zimbra Preferences
  7. It weights less than 100 Kb in size

Regards
Martin

Honestly, I'd rather see effort put into a fully functional toaster rather than browser specific plugins.

As mentioned, the Windows toaster currently on only does new mail notifications. It's also generally pretty rough around the edges. If you would like to see the toaster notify for appointments and generally cleaned up please vote for the following bugs:

Toaster should also show Appointment reminders
Automatically minimize toaster on start up
Change systray icon when new message arrives
