Turning off Reading Pane by Default

I'm looking for an option to turn off the Reading Pane by default, so it will never show and you'll have to double click on the message to open it. I just prefer this behavior of a mail client. If I'm blind and have over looked the option let me know. Otherwise any clues where one would start poking around to implement this option.

I have the same need. Default reading pane setting (on/off) perhaps should be in user preferences and maybe in CoS too.
