Default Message store hard links

I am testing a migration from Sun JES. Sun JES on the messages store links the files for common emails in the same way that Zimbra does. However I'm pretty sure that when I do an imapsync to migrate all the users that the hard links will be lost.

Are the links indeed lost in the migration? Or is Zimbra smart enough when a message comes in to recognize a message is the same and re-link it? If Zimbra does not, has anyone tried re-linking messages once they have migrated?

I am looking at migrating a 150GB message store, so any kind of growth incurred by losing hard links is less than ideal.
