Default [SOLVED] How to get more failure information out of the exchange migration wizard

Hi

I am investigating the possibility of replacing our exchange server with zimbra and so far everything looks good. I have used the exchange migration wizard to migrate a number of mailboxes without error (although I had to do them one at a time) but have run into a problem with the last two accounts. Unfortunately, one of them belongs to the one person I need to convince that moving to zimbra will be a good idea.

Zimbra and wizard version: 5.0.11_GA_2695
Operating system: CENTOS 5

The migration is performed without importing junk mail or deleted items and the Log messages option is selected.

No errors are reported only warnings:
"Could not retrieve all items, x items would be skipped"
with a corresponding entry in the log file of:
"x Table Rows Requested, got just 0"

I have configured zimbrar to allow attachments >10Mb.

Are there any configuration switches or commandline options to the migration wizard that allow me to increase the debugging level to find out why the warnings are being generated?

Thanks
Paul Gallimore

Welcome to the forums

Are these the errors in Exchange Migration log files?

The error log is displayed via the button at the end of the wizard and in a file called m2l.log in a temporary folder.

I have been working on this problem without any further success. Does anyone have any information on how to turn on a more detailed debugging option?

The exchange migration log file is present in user profile's temporary directory e.g. C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\Local Settings\Temp\ZC***changeMigrationWizard<version>\ m2l.log.
There might be few more files can be present e.g. *.xml (contains soap request for which error might have occured),*.eml (message contents for which error occurred) or *.dmp (contains migration wizard crash information). The migration wizard doesnot provide different logging levels and already contains sufficient information to diagnose problem.
If you can post the logfile, i can have a look and try to explain the reason.

Hi Amitabh

I cleared the contents of the temporary folder and reran the wizard. The only files that get created are:
1) a .m2l file (empty)
2) dbghelp.dll
3) an RPC xml error file (created due to certificate issue...see log)
4) m2l.log

The m2l.log file is too big to upload as a single file, so I have split it into two (m2la.log, m2lb.log).

Thanks for having a look.

As per logs the internal MAPI queries to fetch the messages are not returning the results and failing to migrate the messages. The most interesting part is that MAPI is not throwing any errors too which makes it difficult to find the reason of it. Could you check what makes these erroneous account different from other ones which can get migrated successfully? Which Exchange Server is in use - 5.5/2000/2003 ?
Another option to try with Zimbra PST wizard where you can import the complete mail box in form of pst and migrate it.

We are using 2003. I have checked the settings of both accounts against others and can find no discernable differences. I will look again.

As regards using a pst import, I would prefer to stick with the wizard if possible based on your answer to another post of mine (here).

Previous attempts to export mailboxes to pst files from exchange using exmerge were not successful. Unfortunately, we no longer have an exchange "specialist".

By the way, I had to mirgrate the mailboxes using the migration wizard one at a time (it failed otherwise). Carrying out the operation on a per mailbox basis resulted in no errors at all (except for the two accounts).

Default progress update

Since my last post I have been struggling with exporting mailboxes to PST files using exmerge but been unsuccessful. I have, however, managed to create a PST file of the two mailboxes direct from outlook.

One of the mailboxes was imported successfully into Zimbra and so far everything appears OK. Unfortunately, the other mailbox was not so successful.

The PST import wizard completes with any errors and reports the number of messages processed but when checking the mail box in Zimbra the only messages imported are in the Sent Items folder.

Any ideas why this might be?

Regards
Paul

Migration wizrad has option to ignore previously migrated mails. Have you tried to migrate them earlier on same machine? if yes, please uncheck the option and try to migrate again. Please post the log file if problem still persists.
