Default Get emails out of zimbra or get it working again?

I had zimbra 5.08 on a ubuntu 6.06 box (hosting only my email) and had a hdd crash on that box. Fortunately zimbra was on a separate drive (and I had backups of the zimbra folder) so I didn't lose it, but I did lose all my dns, dhcp, etc. settings from that box. Looking at the migration/recovery information I find that the only way to get zimbra back up and running is to have exactly the same network settings (dns, ip, etc). I have tried to get things up on a rebuilt box, but the closest I can come gets parts of zimbra working but the internal mysql won't launch. How can I get my emails out of here? Is there a way I can do a fresh install with new settings and migrate only the emails? Is there a way to get the emails out of the db tables directly? I have about 4gb of email in there and I don't want to lose it.

I had really liked zimbra, but this recovery effort is souring me quickly. It was much simpler to migrate/restore .mailbox directories.

Any help would be appreciated.

Ben

You're not giving much information that's of any use here. Have you installed the exact same version of Zimbra on the new box? Is it on the same release of Ubuntu? What information do you see in the log files?

It's always good practice to take a backup but a recovery plan should also involve trial runs of restoring a crashed system to make sure you're familiar with the process.

Sorry. I don't know what is useful and what isn't. The install guide which led me to install zimbra said backup and restore was easy and required only backing up the zimbra folder. I didn't research it any further than that, which certainly was a mistake on my part.

The version of ubuntu is the same in both cases (6.06 LTS).

The version of zimbra is the same in both cases (5.08_GA_2462).

I have done my best to put back what I can remember the dns names and ip were but that may not be perfect.

I issued:

So is the antivirus the only service that isn't starting? We can also check your DNS, run the following command on the zimbra server (please post the output):

Code:
host `hostname` <-- use backticks not single quotes
cat /etc/hosts
cat /etc/resolv.conf
dig yourdomain.com mx
dig yourdomain.com any

No, the antivirus isn't the only one. After the everything seems to start, I get this:
Code:

Your /etc/hosts file is incorrect. It should look like
Code:
127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost
10.0.0.10 ubuntu.bhk.mine.nu ubuntu

In addition to the hosts file error you also have your internal MX record pointing to your external IP address, this is incorrect as it should point to your 10.x.x.x address. Shutdown Zimbra, make the changes to your DNS then restart Zimbra and post any error messages (if you get any).

You would also appear to have no external MX record pointing to your IP address, you'll also need to fix that otherwise you'll never get any mail delivered. Check the report here: Quick Check - Pingability.com

I changed the hosts file. This email server sits behind a firewall and doesn't have incoming (from internet) smtp connections. All mail is retrieved via fetchmail and delivered locally with procmail. In this case, why does MX record matter? If it does, can you point out where the error is here? I am not seeing anything incorrect. Remember this dns is serving only internal clients.

Code:
; Zone File for bhk.mine.nu
; Ben Kuehmichel
$TTL 1D
@ IN SOA gentoo.bhk.mine.nu. ben.gentoo.bhk.mine.nu. (
                                2008111001 ; serial
                                4H ; refresh
                                30M ; retry
                                1W ; expire
                                8H) ; min TTL

I actually had these starting errors on a new box where I restored a backup, due to the sudoers "requesttty" error. You could check following article: http://wiki.zimbra.com/index.php?title=Sudoers
