Multiple Email server on one domain

Hello all

we are currently using Microsoft Exchange server for all staff in our college and looking to give students email access. Is it possible to keep the exchange server and deploy a Zimbra server only to handle student accounts and leave Exchange still handling staff accounts.

I know this is currently possible if i create a subdomain however is it possible on a single domain.
