Question [SOLVED] Upgrading from 4.5.5 - Advice?

Hi all - I posted this in another section but it probably belongs here...

Hi all,

I am currently running a FC4 box with zimbra 4.5.5. I recently moved my current install to newer hardware, so now I am ready to upgrade.

So - what is the best way to upgrade the open edition 4.5.5 to say 4.5.11 on FC4?

Should it be done one step at a time? 4.5.5 to 4.5.6, then to 4.5.7 and so on? Or can I upgrade all the way to 4.5.11 in one jump?

My eventual plan is to get to 5.02 - however the issue becomes an OS upgrade (I am assuming Fedora 7) as well as a ZCS upgrade - which makes me nervous.

Thanks,
Rob

You do NOT need to go stepwise thru all the versions. You should be able to go all the way to 4.5.11 in a single bound . You must be higher than 4.5.5 to upgrade to any v. 5 package (actually 4.5.7 and later I think), but there's no need to waste your time going through all the intermediate versions.

Of course, though it should go without saying, we always remind you to keep a copy of your current (4.5.5) install binary and take a full backup of /opt/zimbra before you do your upgrade so if anything blows up you can get back to where you started.

Cheers,

Dan

Thanks for the reply. I am 99% sure I will be upgraded to zcs 4.5.11 this saturday, but will still be on a FC4 box...

So - where to go from here? I am thinking of the following:

- I only have ONE box to upgrade, so no "intermediary" steps possible...

Step 1 - backup

Step 2 - install Fedora 7. Follow the instructions here http://www.zimbra.com/blog/archives/...er_server.html
There is a zcs 4.5.11 install for Fedora 7. Versions match, so the move should be OK.

Step 3: Upgrade 4.5.11 to 5.02.

Any thoughts? Possible gotchas?

Thanks,
Rob

You should be OK here as long as the version you're changing OS on is the SAME version before & after. You cannot, for example, back up your 4.5.5, install 4.5.11 on your new FC7 system, and restore the 4.5.5 backup from there. This wiki article should help you:

Thanks,

Looks like I am going...

4.5.5 on FC4 -> 4.5.11 on FC4

Then

4.5.11 on FC4 -> 4.5.11 on FC7 (fresh install of FC7)

Then

4.5.11 on FC7 -> 5.02 on FC7

Looks like three steps...

Thanks,
Rob

The Zimbra website recommends to go to 4.5.10 first.

Question

Just wanted to say thanks, and close out this thread.

My upgrade to 4.5.11 went without a hitch.

Thanks,
Rob
