Can Zimbra clients run with Exchange Server

This is a plea from a business analyst.
I am interested in moving open office forward but we as a company are engrained in MS products.
The last hurdle that our technical staff are putting in our way is that any open office / source product is fine but what about the Mail Server. They do not want to move away from Exchange for a number of reasons and I'd heard that Zimbra mail clients could run with an Exchange server. Has anyone done this or had experience of it?

There is a Web UI that is used to access the Zimbra server, it is specific and integral to Zimbra and isn't just a web interface to the server. Wht'ther objcion to moving way from Exchange? Have they seen the hosted demo of Zimbra?
