Unhappy messages stuck in deffered folder

I have been able to install Zimbra on Ubuntu lts 6.06 and send out email, but incoming email is stuck in the deferred massage folder. the reason for the error is "connect to mail.manitoueng.com [63.193.58.50] connection refused".

I am not sure why it is looking for the public IP address. I have the machine behind a router/firewall and have given the mail.manitoueng.com a private ip address. If the mail can make it to the machine and into the queue, why can't it get delivered to the individual mail boxes.

Did you also install a local DNS server with correct A & MX records pointing to your server? Do you also have a correct /etc/hosts file? Do you also have your local DNS server in your /etc/resolv.conf file?

Red face local dns server

I do not have a local dns server. I am using my router/firewall (monowall) as a caching/forwarding dns server because my dsl provider is also hosting my dns. Will creating an internal dns server cause a problem with this setup.

my hosts file
192.168.204.1 mail.manitoueng.com

and when I check hostname -f
mail.manitoueng.com

my resolv.conf points all dns requests to the firewall 192.168.204.254

the A record and the MX record on the hosting dns server both point to 63.193.58.50 which is the WAN address of my router/firewall.

Are you suggesting that I need a local dns server for the mail program to find the the local machine inside the firewall?

As you can tell, I am not a linux sys admin.

Yeah, DNS is a requirement. I wrote a little on setting up Zimbra and BIND:
