Default Ubuntu 6.06 LTS server install problems

I am attempting to install Ubuntu 6.06 server. Long story short. I installed a demo server on Debian. Our Exchange server crashed and we dumped onto demo server since it was already configured. (Exchange server is beyond repair, long story there). We decided to look at Zimbra as a complete replacement. So now I am left with the task of trying to install the NE of Zimbra. So first I installed Ubuntu 6.06.

Using some instructions given to me by zimbra, I copied the old /opt/zimbra folder from the old server. Put it on the new server (new install on same machine) and then ran the open source edition for ubuntu installer using the install.sh -s option.

Now I can't seem to access our zimbra server. As best as I can tell it is running, but I can't access port 80 on the server. Maybe it's a firewall, I'm not sure, but I'm also not that familiar with Ubuntu.

I am trying to get this working tonight, so any help is greatly appreciated.

John

After some digging it looks like that the Ubuntu issues could be related to DNS problems. I've been trying for hours to configure bind manually, and cannot. In the past I always used webmin, which seems to be a pain to install on ubuntu.

Bind appears to be functioning, but just not for my domain.

/etc/bind/named.conf.local
Code:
zone "safarivet.com" {
        type master;
        file "/var/cache/bind/safarivet.com.hosts";
};
/var/cache/bind/safarivet.com.hosts
Code:
$TTL 86400
@       IN      SOA     mail.safarivet.com. (
        2007022601
        28800
        7200
        604800
        86400
)
@       IN      NS      mail.safarivet.com.
@       IN      MX  10  mail.safarivet.com.
@       IN      A       24.173.235.173
www     IN      A       24.173.235.173
mail    IN      A       24.173.235.170

Hey John,
Welcome to the Zimbra Forums!

Sorry to hear about the exchange server . . tough break.

So, let's look at some logs.
What does a zmcontrol status show? I'm guessing the installation was sucessful??

Also, it would be helpful to post the following:
/opt/zimbra/log/mailbox.log
/opt/zimbra/tomcat/logs/catalina.out
/var/log/zimbra.log

thanks
jh

Host mail.safarivet.com
antispam Running
antivirus Running
ldap Running
logger Stopped
logmysql.server is not running
mailbox Stopped
mysql.server is not running
tomcat is not running
mta Running
snmp Running
spell Running

That certainly helps explain some things.

Hey
Ya, we're gonna need the logs.
Also a
cat /etc/hosts will help.

So, it doesn't look like a DNS issue . . .yet.
All of the tomcat threads are dumping.

Can you run the installer without the -s option?
It shouldn't hurt your data (backup first).

Also, be sure to run the zmfixperms script in /opt/zimbra/libexec

Ran installer without the -s option, and it did the same thing. Only 2 parts have problems. #1 when checking DNS entries for the domain and hostname, and #2 when installing Documents (which we won't use right now anyway).

zmfixperm didn't change anything. Seems to still not run properly
