Question Compilation Seems to be going okay

Hi,

So further to our discussion, can i use the latest versions of the third-party applications as long as i edit Makefile to reflect the versions?

Or, as I suspect will be the case, is there a specific reason as to why older versions of things such as mysql and openldap have been used?

thanks

Costa

Just as a heads up:
We're gonna be changing the building processes here soon to make it MUCH easier to build from source.

The problem is with licensing: We can't include some of the 3rd party things in the source tar.

Anyway, we're gonna be doing some really awesome stuff with open source builds. This hasn't been our strongest Area, and we're gonna be improving that.

I should clarify that we're gonna be adding tools to assist you. Not change the building processes.

Costa-101 I share your pain, however as you'll find later it's not as simple as using the latest versions and updating the makefile. version numbers are hardcoded into various points of the source tree which you'll find out only after you've finished the thirdparty build process.

also using later versions than in the source WILL have unforseen consequences later on, APIs change, lib versions change, config syntax changes etc etc.

if you really want, have a look at my thirdparty build notes for solaris, it has up to date paths for getting the third party tarballs:

jholder, great news on the build tools, the thirdparty build is a particularly painful process

.....erm, as these links are likely to change with every version release I don't think there's much point in posting them all here.
unfortunately they rarely update with releases, some thirdparty components are years old and out of date. when the source tree reopens I plan to raise bug reports against old thirdparty versions.

Obviously I was talking about the version changes in Zimbra, people can get the links from the source when it's available.
links aren't in the source

Please go for it, I have been able to build consistently for the last two months, but the inaccessibility of the source code is a real problem for open source developers.

look back in the developer forum, someone posted a bsd patch a while ago. it's unlikely it will apply to current tree but will give you a good starting point if you want to do a port. also i've done a port recently to solaris which probably faced many of the same issues you'll face. i warn you it is not an easy job!!!

good luck!
