For those interested:
after two days of helping Peterz, it turns out that the mysql database wasn't getting propegated for some unknown reason.

During the install, he monitored the logs, and when it said:
**Can't connecto to mysql, retrying

He opened another terminal window and ran
su - zimbra
zmmyinit

DO NOT RUN THE ABOVE COMMAND ON A PRODUCTION SYSTEM!!!

This allowed the mysqldb to get propagated, and the installation proceeded normally.

This seems to be a unique event; however, if other users seem to have a problem, please check the logs.

If you see the can't connect to mysql, retrying, it's possible (but not certain) that this could be your issue.

You can only do this on a totally clean install, and it is not recommended, nor endorsed by the Zimbra team.

Jup, that fixed my issue aswell...

OS: CentOS 5
Zimbra: OS ver. 4.5.10 GA Release

Did at clean install and everything according to this nice guide:
Installing Zimbra on CENTOS

But still had to run /opt/zimbra/libexec/zmmyinit as zimbra user.
