Default Install on Ubuntu Edgy - postfix not running

I've just installed Zimbra (v4.5.2) on a new, freshly installed Ubuntu 6.10 (Edgy) server box, following the guide on http://www.howtoforge.com/installing...uite_on_ubuntu

DNS has been setup correctly from a previously working Ubuntu 6.06/Zimbra box.
Installation appears to complete, but a 'zmcontrol status' shows the MTA as stopped, postfix not running. For masochistic pleasure, reformatted and repeated - just in case I missed something out - with the same result.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Mark

Let's take a look at the
/var/log/zimbra.log

That's the postfix log, so if there's anything wrong, it'll be in there.

If you can, look at it, and post anything you see wrong.

Default postfix not running - zimbra.log

Since other services seemed to be OK, I attempted to start postfix manually. The system seemed to accept this, so I then took the following from the /var/log/zimbra.log:

Apr 26 08:22:04 zimbra CRON[22152]: (pam_unix) session closed for user zimbra

After reading some posts & seeing the 'permissions denied, I tried (as user zimbra) to fix the permissions to see if that helped: /opt/zimbra/libexec/zmfixperms & then stopped & started postfix -
Same results in the log.

After a bit of fiddling, managed to mess things up so uninstalled zimbra (since it is a fresh install system), cleared the zimbra.log and re-installed. Once complete, logged into the admin GUI and server status showed mta stopped.
zimbra.log runs to about 370 lines, so will show snippets:

There were some similar sections with these 'permissions denied' lines.

Well,
You should probably check to see if you have something running on port 25. If you don't think so, check again.

Then look to see if you have iptables/nat/ or any sort of network service routing going.

Permission denied doesn't only mean that you don't have privledges. . .it can simply mean that it can't bind. Misleading, I know

Default checking port 25 & iptables

OK - with zimbra stopped (zmcontrol stop), netstat -a produced nothing for port 25. Telnetting to port 25 produced no connection. Using 'iptables -L' produced nothing. What should I look for to check NAT rules?

Restarted zimbra & checked again.

netstat -an | grep 25 produced
tcp 0 0 127.0.0.1:10025 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN
tcp 0 0 0.0.0.0:25 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN
tcp6 0 0 :::7025 :::* LISTEN
unix 2 [ ACC ] STREAM LISTENING 112125 public/cleanup
unix 2 [ ] DGRAM 112257

so something is listening on port 25. Telnetted to port 25 (telnet localhost 25) and got the following output:
Trying 127.0.0.1...
Connected to localhost.
Escape character is '^]'.
220 zimbra.wnsc.ac.uk ESMTP Postfix

So, I presume postfix is listening - still showing as stopped on the Admin GUI

What about SELinux?

Try a service iptables stop
zmcontrol start

The server is using Ubuntu - I haven't installed SELinux (& couldn't find an indication that it's there)

Not sure how to stop iptables in ubuntu - tried iptables -F to flush any rules.
Will do some more research after tea.

OK - apparently, the equivalent to Fedora's 'service iptables stop' for Ubuntu is

iptables -F
iptables -X
iptables -t nat -F
iptables -t nat -X
iptables -t mangle -F
iptables -t mangle -X
iptables -P INPUT ACCEPT
iptables -P FORWARD ACCEPT
iptables -P OUTPUT ACCEPT

not quite as concise

I've done that, followed by zmcontrol start - mta still stopped!

Hi,
Debian uses init.d service scripts (well, Ubuntu uses Upstart but it's compatible). So you should be able to do,

sudo /etc/init.d/iptables restart | stop | start

or other things like

sudo /etc/init.d/alsa-utils force-reload

to start and stop services
