Hi guys, I really do appreciate all the help.

Ok so I installed BIND9 and started working through the Split-DNS doc.

Unfortunately there is no /etc/named.conf file, there is a /etc/bind9/named.conf - (apparently I am to make any changes in the named.conf.local file - which does not contain any of the text listed in the split-DNS doc)

I did find the forwarders entry in named.conf.options and I added all of the DNS servers we have in there.

I eventually worked out the files and made the changes as I thought they should be.

Put the mail.doamin1.com zone into the named.conf.local file.
Put the Forwarders into the named.conf.options file
Created a db.mail.domain1.com file
Changed the resolv.conf to have the local ip in there

I did an nslookup mail.domain1.com on the mail server and it returned

Server:
Address: #53
** server can't find mail.domain1.com: SERVFAIL

I enabled the query-source address * port 53 in the named.conf.options file - not sure if I should have done this. I will disable and test it.

Also in the resolv.conf I just added the local ip addr to the file, should I have done anything else with it.

Thanks for your help guys

I'm more of a RedHat/Fedora guy, but I just did a quick Google search for Ubuntu DNS, and it appears you are working with the right configuration files.

I think the error you are getting may indicate a configuration problem, most likely with the db file. Check in your system logs for messages related to named. It may give you a hint of what is wrong.

Redhat is definitely the #1 recommended platform for Zimbra and the most commonly used. It may be in your best interests to switch now before you have everything up and running. You can download Redhat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) from the net. I find the Oracle website is pretty quick for that.

Any chance you would like to reconsider your platform before you get too far in?

Too far in mate.

Phoenix asked me to do the following yesterday

dig mydomain.com any

Result: Returned local ip addr

dig mydomain.com mx

Result: Returned local ip addr

host 'hostname'

hostname has addr external DNS Server IP
hostname mail is handled by 10 domain.not.configured.

Looking up the hostname domain.not.configured at the moment

Maybe getting closer

The command host `hostname` was with backticks not single quotes, did you do that? Can you post the details of your hosts file: cat /etc/hosts

OK, your hosts file is incorrect. The format should be this:
Code:
127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost
192.168.1.15 mail.forexmgr.com mail
try that and see how you get on.

Bill,

I changed the hosts file because it was saying mail.domain1.com mail.domain1.com to mail.domain1.com mail and restarted the networking

Now host `hostname` returns

mail.doamin1.com has addr "expr ip addr"

nslookup and dig are now returning the existing DNS server IPs for mail.domain1.com - is this correct?

Does this mean my split DNS is incorrectly set up?

Ok, I got Zimbra to install mail.domain1.com without the MX record error. Went back and double-checked all of my BIND files and changed any entries I was initially unsure off. Obviously I had one of them incorrect because now nslookup resolves to the local ip and zimbra installed without any issues.

I will now try and set up the other domains, my questions is do I have to create a zone in DNS for each of the new domains?
