Is this a new install or an upgrade? Do you have correct DNS A & MX records for you server?

this is a new install.

the server is a slave DNS
I have not setup the records yet.

why should that matter?

Well, we need to have correct records to find the server and deliver mail - it's mentioned in the documentation.

Default we who?

I need to be able to login to the administration interface and setup users before I can deploy the server. the server is being delivered on friday, and I need it to work before it's in place. otherwise, installing zimbra was a huge waste of my time. setting up the DNS entries is trivial and should not be a requirement for basic administration/operation of the stack. At this point, this is my first experience with zimbra, and if I can't get this resolved by friday, it will be my last.

when I start zimbra, the only visual feedback I get is that ldap is starting:
zimbra@server:~> zmcontrol stop
Host server.mydomain.com
Stopping mta...Done
Stopping spell...Done
Stopping snmp...Done
Stopping antivirus...Done
Stopping antispam...Done
Stopping imapproxy...Done
Stopping mailbox...Done
Stopping logger...Done
Stopping ldap...Done
zimbra@server:~> zmcontrol start
Host server.mydomain.com
Starting ldap...Done.

why doesn't it restart the mta or any other of the services?

The 'we' in this case is postfix and the LDAP, without correct DNS records (including the /etc/hosts file) you'll be going nowhere.

will zimbra work behind a firewall?

or behind nat? in the same way as a normal mta would work?
