A shaky start for a Linux/Zimbra noob...

i'm a complete and utter novice at linux and zimbra.

i'm dying to replace my Exchange 5.5 server (about 130 users) and am looking at testing zimbra.

i went out and bought a Red Hat Fedora and Enterprise Linux 4 Bible.

i grabbed an old workstation (Celeron 2.4 GHz, 1 Gb RAM)and installed FC4 on it as a test platform.

i am trying to install zimbra on that box to evaluate it.

i am stuck at the following prompt:

You appear to be installing packages on a platform different the platfrom for which they were built

This platform is FC4
Packages found: zimbra-core-4.5.3_GA_733.RHEL4-20070228100.631.rpm
This may or may not work

Install anyway? [N]

Will it install on FC4? I did not see a Fedora install package.

Works great on FC4, but not with the RHEL install.

No, Fedora is Open Source version only.

Network Edition is RedHat, Suse and MacOSX for now.

If you're after a Network Edition trial then click on the button (top right) from the main page at http://www.zimbra.com/

You must install Zimbra NE on one of the supported operating systems.

Am I going to have to purchase a RHEL version in order to evaluate NE? If so, does it matter what version of RHEL I get?

Whether you can install NE on FC4 is rather a moot point, you won't get support for doing that and there's no build for it and therefore a waste of time.

If this is to be a trial and not in production then you could use CentOS4 (a RHEL4 build) but again (I must stress this) it's not supported by Zimbra - I would recommend you get RHEL4. The only supported platforms are RHEL4, SLES9 and MAC OS X - SLES 10 support will be coming very soon. There are some differences between RHEL and CentOS so you'd need to check the wiki and forums, it's basically the compat libraries you need to check.

OK, downloaded and installed the FC4 version.

Installed and had one error, the wildly popular 'Error - failed to start slapd'

I think it may be because I had originally set the ip address for the hosts file with the outside ip of my mailserver (the one in the mx record). i changed this to the inside ip and i can at least ping it.

How can I tell if the server will send and receive mail?

I think you are going to have to post some more information before anyone can tell you whether or not your server will send and receive mail. For starters, the output of the 'ps' command you posted simply shows that it appears you've gotten past the initial problem with 'slapd', and that it is now running. The 'slapd' process is only one part of Zimbra. You might want to look at the Zimbra Admin console web page or look at the output of 'zmcontrol status' to make sure other parts of Zimbra are running as well.

Beyond that, you say you are trying to replace an Exchange server. Are you testing this Zimbra server in the same environment? If yes, you may want to look at the "Split Domain" wiki page which discusses migrating some users over to Zimbra while others remain on the current email server. If you're testing in a totally separate environment do you have things like DNS and MX records setup? These are critical in being able to send and receive mail.
