    Thanks for the replies

    @axslingr

    I agree it seems like the server is not using BIND, but I have no idea why. The 20 mx record is pulling from my registrar. That was an entry I put in when I first set it up. I have since removed it since, it is not needed or setup that way.

    The result of
    nslookup mail.timberwolfhosting.net is
    Code:
    > nslookup mail.timberwolfhosting.net
    Server:		192.168.0.3
    Address:	192.168.0.3#53

    ** server can't find mail.timberwolfhosting.net: NXDOMAIN
    I also added that line you suggested. The official wiki did not have anything there, so I did not either. I added it, but unfortunately get the same error.

    @Phoenix
    I can undestand that... I just have no idea where that setting would be. Every setting I have found or read about is set to use my server. For some reason, it just seems to be ignoring the settings.

    Code:
    zone "mail.timberwolfhosting.net" {
    	type master;
    	file "db.mail.timberwolfhosting.net";
    In your named.conf file, make the above look like this:

    Code:
    zone "timberwolfhosting.net" {
    	type master;
    	file "db.timberwolfhosting.net";
    I would even enter the entire path to the zone file. Mine are in /var/lib/bind on my Ubuntu 12.04 server

    Then rename your zone file to db.timberwolfhosting.net

    Now edit your zone file and make this line:
    Code:
    @	IN	SOA	mail.timberwolfhosting.net. admin.timberwolfhosting.net. (
    Look like this:
    Code:
    timberwolfhosting.net.	IN	SOA	mail.timberwolfhosting.net. admin.timberwolfhosting.net. (
    Restart named and see if it works now.

    I made those changes, and restarted the bind9 service (I assume that is the same as restarting the named service). I also rebooted the server to be sure.

    host $(hostname) gives the same error as always.
    Code:
    Host mail not found: 3(NXDOMAIN)
    After I made those changes, however, nslookup mail.timberwolfhosting.net gives a different error than before.
    Code:
    > nslookup mail.timberwolfhosting.net
    Server:		192.168.0.3
    Address:	192.168.0.3#53

    ** server can't find mail.timberwolfhosting.net.timberwolfhosting.net: SERVFAIL

    Default Split DNS - Partly Working [Solved]

    Thanks to axslingr for the help in getting it working. For my setup, I needed to specify the domain in the db.domain file rather than use the @. I also needed to add the full path to my zone specifications. And don't forget the preceding slash like I did. Once I did that, everything was working. If you are running Ubuntu 12.04 and trying to setup splitDNS for zimbra, trying being more specific.
